Dear Parent or Guardian, I wanted to inform you of an opportunity for your child to travel to the country of Dominican Republic for an alternative Winter Break trip. Students will volunteer their time in Santo Domingo, participate in the closing service of the Episcopal diocese convention, and most significantly, view the humpback whales that make their annual trip to the small coastal town of Samana Bay. This is a trip designed for students who want to help others, who love the ocean, enjoy the outdoors, can appreciate different cultures, and are looking for adventure. They will depart Charleston on Thursday, February 16 and return on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. Head out on the town for a dinner immersed in their culture. Sat Santo Domingo Holdepa Caribe Hotel BLD After an early breakfast, visit some sites of Santo Domingo and then return to Iglesia Santisima to complete all projects that started on the first day. Sun SD to Samana The Bannister Hotel BLD Spend the morning attending the final day of the Episcopal Diocese convention church service. Eat lunch at the convention and then board the bus for the two hour ride to Samana. Spend the afternoon enjoying the beach and the town of Samana. Mon Samana The Bannister Hotel BLD Wake up early and board the ship for a whale watching adventure of a lifetime! The group will board "Whale Samana" with Kim Beddall, which provides a safe and sensitive whale watching experience. Spend the afternoon kayaking and snorkeling in the bay. Enjoy the final dinner together as a group. Tues Samana BLD Spend your last morning in Dominican Republic enjoying the beach and possibly one more short adventure before boarding the bus to the Santo Domingo airport for your return flight home. Chaperones: Chaperones will be determined once the student group is determined. Land Cost Per Person: At 12 students and 2 chaperones, the land cost is approximately $1,300.00_ per student. Land Cost includes: All in country accommodations, transportation, expert local guide, activities, and meals as stated above. Beverages with meals consist of teas, juices, and/or processed water (all bottled water is extra). Please note that group size changes, pricing will need to be adjusted. Strictly interpreted, it is illegal for pupils to be out of school for any reason other than personal illness, death in the family, quarantine, detained by parent for necessary work, and religious holiday. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the parent and child to make up all work missed. For pupils who will be absent due to vacation (or similar reason), the following procedure is to be observed: A. Notify the school principal of the dates of absence at least three (3) days in advance of departure by completing this form. REASON FOR REQUEST DATES OF REQUESTED ABSENCE Parent's Signature Student's Signature B. The student should make up as much of the work to be missed as possible before departure. The initiative for securing assignments from teachers rests with the pupil and parents. It is then the responsibility of the student to accomplish the work to be covered and to have it back to the teacher on the day they return from the absence. C. Administrators may approve or disapprove the absence request depending on the student's grades and attendance. D. PLANNED ABSENCES ARE LIMITED TO 5 DAYS PER SCHOOL YEAR. SUBSEQUENT ABSENCES WILL BE UNEXCUSED (EVEN IF THIS FORM IS COMPLETED). PLANNED ABSENCES DO COUNT TOWARDS 10 DAYS OF ALLOTTED ABSENCES AND TOTAL FOR LOSS OF CREDIT.
