195.226.192.56 Chairman's Report Dear members, As the AGM approaches I look back over the year of Ely Bridge Club in which we celebrated our 50 th anniversary. This culminated in a celebration lunch at Ely Golf Club at the end of November, where coincidentally the Club was formed and bridge was first played. The lunch was attended by forty eight members and guests and was followed by an afternoon of duplicate bridge. The Club bestowed honorary life membership to George Jupp for his considerable se rvice to the club as he has held various offices over a 16 year period. During the year the Club has updated its constitution which has been adapted from the EBU template and may be viewed on the Club's website. The introdu ction of pre dealt hands took place during the year for play on Monday afternoons. They were already being played on Tuesday evenings and following a trial run on Monday afternoons, the overwhelming majority of Monday afternoon players agreed to use them o n a permanent basis. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Club officers and committee members for their hard work, all of which is voluntary and for their support during the year. I was unaware of the amount of work whi ch goes on behind the scenes which enables playing sessions on a Monday and Tuesday to run smoothly. Particular thanks should go to Barry Lowe our secretary, John Davey our treasurer, David Newman our scorer, Chris Stolberg and Jacquie Hide for refreshment s and all of the directors. On the financial front the Club is in a relatively strong position and I am not aware of any major capital expenditure in the foreseeable future. Numbers are slowly increasing at the Bowls Club on Tuesday evenings and I would strongly recommend more pairs playing on a Monday afternoon should try playing on a Tuesday where they will be warmly welcomed and find a very friendly atmosphere. Play starts at 7pm and finishes around 10.15pm. Our President Peter Watson has decided to step down at the AGM having given 9 years of excellent service to the committee including being treasurer and chairman. He is the third longest serving officer in the Club's history. Peter was largely responsibl e for the introduction of the Monday afternoon sessions at the Sugar Beet Club. On behalf of both the Club and the committee I would like to thank Peter for his unstinting work and wise counsel over the years. I am pleased to confirm Peter will remain a pl aying member. The remaining committee have kindly agreed to continue for another year but if any member would like to join the committee they will be most welcome. At present we have a gender imbalance and hopefully lady members will help to redress the s ituation. The committee are always receptive to members suggestions to improve the Club and please speak to me or any other committee member with your ideas. In the Cambs and Hunts League , Ely 3 are 4 th out of 6 teams in Division 2 with 2 matches to play. Ely 2 are 5 th out of 6 teams in Division 3 with one match to play. Our team of David , Jacquie, Peter, Dave and Barry have reached the semi final of the County knockout Cup (Plate). Good luck to them in the semis and hopefully they will win the trophy. Finally may I wish you all good health and an enjoyable year of bridge. Philip Ambrose Chairman
