Dear Student Congratulations on gaining your place on the MPharm Programme in the Department of Pharmacy. I am the Programme Tutor and I am looking forward to seeing you at the beginning of the new academic session. I will be your main contact at the University during your studies, supported by the Year Tutor and your Academic Tutor, who will be assigned to you during the first week of term. Please note that term starts on Monday 23 September 2013 at 8.45 am. The first week is an 'Induction Week' to introduce you to the University, the staff, the modules and each other. Please arrive at the University between 8.00 - 9.00 am and make your way to Prince Edward Hall as indicated on the campus map. Registration, for students who have not already completed online registration, takes place during Induction Week. You will need to bring the following to your registration session: a) The confirmation email received from UCAS to confirm your place. b) Your offer of admission. You will need this letter in case there are any questions about your course. c) The originals of any qualifications required for the course to which you have been admitted d) Personal Identification, either i. Your passport if you were born outside the UK or if you have spent any time living outside the UK or ii. If you were born in the UK another official form of identification such as a photo driving licence e) Financial information i. Your Student Finance England assessment/correspondence if you are expecting a student loan or ii. Formal, written confirmation of funding if you are being sponsored. We require either a letter from your sponsor on headed paper or a completed and signed 'Agreement to sponsor' form which can be downloaded from http://www.herts.ac.uk/courses/fees-and-funding/sponsored-fees/home.cfm or iii. Payment in the form of credit/debit card if you are paying fees yourself. Payment by debit or credit card is a more secure way for you to pay your fees. If you are self-funding you will need to pay 50% of the course fee in order to register. Some cash is essential to last until your student loan arrives. Be prepared for various expenses during your first week:
Laboratory coats cost approximately £15. You will need a minimum of one laboratory coat for pharmacy practice which you may purchase at a timetabled session held at the University during your first week. Students requiring a laboratory hijab will also be able to buy these at a cost of between £8-10.
Laboratory log books cost approximately £5.00. You will need to purchase two.
You will only be allowed to use a University approved calculator for examinations. You will be able to purchase a calculator at cost price (around £7) from the Student Union Shop.
Specific text books will be recommended for each module once you are here. You need to budget for a minimum of approximately £100 for purchasing text books for the first year.
As you are studying Foundations of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, you will need a chemistry laboratory locker for which you may be charged a £20 refundable charge. If you require any additional support for your studies because of a disability (including dyslexia), you will need to contact DisabilityServices@herts.ac.uk before you arrive, so that appropriate arrangements can be made for the beginning of the academic year. For many of you this will be your first prolonged time away from home. I hope you will look forward to making new friends, trying new activities, studying an exciting subject and generally exploring all that University life has to offer. I also realise that the first few days can be rather bewildering and I do want to stress that all of the staff are keen to welcome you to the pharmacy 'family' and to make you feel at home here.
