</table>March 2017 Vol. 13 Issue 3 Lent is the season before Easter. It is forty days long because that's how long Jesus went into the desert and was tempted by Satan. Lent is our time to be in the desert, surrounded by our temptations and faults, with the hopes that we, too, will emerge and stand ready for true ministry and joy. This year as we visit the desert, along with accompanying Jesus, we will also go to the deserts of the Old Testament. We will focus on the exiled prophets, who cried out in the wilderness for justice in their world. We will hear the words of Amos, who called the exiled Israelites to let "justice roll down like waters." This Lent we pray we see all the ways we fail short as individuals and a society. May we spent this season examining ourselves and our world, longing for the world God promised. ROLL DOWN, JUSTICE Throughout Lent, we will gather each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for prayer and an introduction to a spiritual discipline. Our tradition has some timeless practices to experience God. Amy was my undergraduate religion professor while I was a student at Oklahoma City University. She lives out her spirituality in beautiful and practical ways. I remember walking into one of her classes with her. I commented, "Oh good, I thought I was late for class." She said, "We are, but for Lent, I gave up rushing and worrying if l'm running late." She embodies her faith and brings that into every room she enters. Presently, Dr. Oden is Professor of Early Church History and Spirituality at Saint Paul School of Theology at OCU. Teaching is her calling, and she looks forward to every day with students. For 25 years, Amy has taught theology and history, pursuing scholarship in service of the church. Most of her work has been an effort to make ancient voices, especially women's, accessible to current audiences. Born and raised on the prairies of Oklahoma, she currently lives in Oklahoma City with her husband, who is a United Methodist pastor. She is also the niece of Bishop Bill Oden, who served Crown Heights UMC in the 1970's. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, this March CHUM Movie Night presents... COMRADE X (1940) starring Clark Gable and Hedy Lamarr Saturday, March 25 @ 6:00pm Clark Gable plays an American journalist toying with hearts in Moscow while uncovering political intrigue at the Kremlin in this spirited satire of Soviet Russia, full of fun, droll dialog and fantastic farce. As usual, this screening will feature an introduction by me and is appropriate for ages 10+. Drinks and popcorn are provided. Other pot-luck movie snacks are welcome. MOVIE NIGHT 1. The Fishermen Class meets in the Youth Activity Building. They follow the adult Sunday School curriculum by Cokesbury Publishing House. They share leadership responsibilities. 2. The Pyramid Classalso meets in the Youth Activity Building. They rotate topics, often discussing books or video series. Right now, they are in a series on Christian architecture. Their teacher is Elizabeth Anthony. SUNDAY SCHOOL OPTIONS MARCH 2017 PAGE 3 A WORD OF THANKS FROM OUR JUDGE Judge Amick turned 94 on January 31. Many of our members sent him greetings. This was his response: My Dear Friends, February 5 I want to thank the Lord for permitting me to live long enough to read all of the beautiful incredible birthday cards and messages I received, and was able to read the sentiments therein expressed. I wish I had the energy to respond to the sentiments expressed by each sender. These sentiments moved my heart in such a way that I can hardly described. I love each and every one of you. Sincerely, John M. Amick 3. The Journey Class meets in the Parlor. They enjoy discussions based on books, video series, and Bible studies. As Lent begins on March 5th, they will read Joan's Chittister's book called In Search of Belief. Trina Bose North teaches this class. 4. The Discovery Class meets (3 of the 4 Sundays per month) in the Library in the Youth Activity Building. Recently they have been reading "Letters on Christmas" and are enjoying that topic. Janet Basler leads this class. Our church has some wonderful Sunday School classes meeting weekly. Especially throughout Lent, consider if one of these classes is right for you. In between the worship services, we offer Sunday School classes for all ages. They meet from 9:45- 10:45 a.m. each Sunday. Eggs will be used in the Easter Egg Hunt for our kids. EASTER FOR OUR KIDS by Katie Langer Mark Your Calendars for Wednesday, APRIL 26th. Violins are making music now. Drums now have real rhythms echoing from them. Sculpted clay pots have been fired, glazed and fired again, to be admired by their creators and fellow students. Pianos have music flowing out of them that make feet start dancing to the sounds. Guitar players are becoming singers also as they accompany themselves in making music. Artists are hard at work drawing faces, and landscapes in ways that show much creativity. Photographers are finding different angles to things, and how to let the computer help them see things didn't realize were in their photos. Singers are memorizing lines, music, and beginning to learn some choreography to accompany their songs. It is an exciting time at the Arts Academy! The young teachers are guiding their students toward the Recital/Showcase on April 26th. With 2 weeks off for Spring Break between now and then, perfecting their performances and artwork is becoming more and more the priority. Both teachers and students are anxiously preparing for the time they can show you and their families how much they've learned this year. Please save the date - April 26th, 4:30-5:30 pm - and plan to come celebrate and encourage our young musicians and artists. ARTS ACADEMY PREPARES FOR SPRING RECITAL/SHOWCASE by Janet Basler We keep getting new tutors and new Whiz Kids this year !! Since January we have added 4 new students to begin reading with the 4 new tutors who have volunteered. It is awesome to see new people come into this tutoring program with excitement and joy on their faces. This year Pastor Trina has brought much excitement and great storytelling to the Bible ClubTime at Whiz Kids. The kids are learning Bible stories about people who have their own names: Josiah, Rebecca, Nathan, Noah, and Priscilla. Their pride and excitement in learning that their names are in the stories of the Bible is wonderful to see. During our 'Star of the Week' this year we have learned that several of our Whiz Kids want and plan to be doctors when they are grown. They want to help others as they or someone in their families have been helped. We've also learned how hard each of our Whiz Kids are working to learn to read better. Some are getting to the point where they are enjoying the books they're reading so much they look for new ones to read outside of Whiz Kids - a first for them in their lives. Thank you for your prayers and support of the Whiz Kids and their tutors. Lives are truly being changed through our Whiz Kids. Jamie Gross said, "They sold 81 boxes!!! It was so much fun, they really had a blast and they all got to do different jobs. Thanks for letting us sell - our church is so generous!" February 12, 2017 Drew Southworth and Moriah Miller joined our church. In January, Kyle and Robert Hicks, Allie and Wesley Burkett, Crystal Wells, Randy Whiten, and Eva Whiten (Randy's mom) also joined our church. Each of these people bring to our church their faith and gifts for God. We are so blessed. Make a special effort to get to know them.

We are so excited he/she will be joining us for sixth grade in August! As your child’s sixth grade math teacher, I will be spending the year focusing not only on mathematical growth, but growth in mindset â€" understanding that we may not fully grasp everything the first time we see it, but with hard work and perseverance â€" we will get there! We will begin our school year with some growth mindset activities that challenge us and remind us that we all can do math, and then we will begin our content! In order to be best prepared for the rigor of sixth grade, I ask that the children come in with some 5th grade skills reviewed and ready to go. All of the topics students should have learned in 5th grade can be found here: Most specifically, students should enter in August with the following skills: • Understanding place value up to the hundred-thousands (and decimals to the hundredths) • Multiplying multi-digit numbers using the traditional algorithm • Dividing multi-digit numbers by a single or double digit number using the traditional algorithm • Finding equivalent fractions • Determining what operation to use and completion of the operation from a word problem (whole numbers, fractions AND decimals) • Find and label ordered pairs on a coordinate plane • Differentiate between 2-dimensional shapes by their characteristics/properties (i.e. triangles, quadrilaterals) To review these skills over the summer, students are encouraged to review their own text/workbook from 5th grade, as well as use various websites to assist. Some suggestions are: Khan Academy - https://www.khanacademy.org/ Math Playground - https://www.mathplayground.com/ IXL - https://www.ixl.com/ There are many more where that came from, and I’d love to see new ones that your child finds over the summer! I acknowledge their efforts by sharing how each employed "story" in her support of my learning. Dr. Carol Gilles, you validated my teaching as you listened to my classroom stories. Many times as we talked, you added, "Tell me a story about your Kiddos that shows what you mean." The stories I shared with you were often related to the books we read in the classroom. From you I learned the value of sharing great picture books with fifth and sixth graders, and because of you literature discussion groups became central to the learning of my fifth grade students as well as to my learning as a teacher. Literature discussions provided the foundation for our classroom learning communities. When you invited me to write the stories about my fifth and sixth graders, you added, "You will write, you have great things to say about Kiddos, and I will help you." Your comment serves as a constant reminder and model for what I believe about teaching. When I indicated my intent to use a narrative inquiry approach to my study, thereby taking a somewhat divergent path in my research, you told me I might find myself out on an island, all alone. Despite your words of caution, I was certain you would never leave me stranded on that island. Over the years you gently nudged, "When are you going to get your PhD?" At last, you and I are almost there. Dr. Nancy Knipping, you challenged me to a deeper understanding of the work of John Dewey when you asked me to describe "what Dewey looks like" in a Kindergarten and second grade classroom. In essence, you were asking me to "tell a story" as a way of understanding Dewey's work. Little did I know the extent to which John Dewey and his iii ideas on "educative experiences" were to guide my thinking throughout this study. Dr. Knipping, what I learned in your classes made a huge impact on the void in my knowledge of early childhood education. I knew Jonathon well by the end of the semester, and by telling your "Jonathon Stories," you made difficult concepts and theory about early childhood learning easy to understand. Dr. Candace Kuby, you agreed to join my committee shortly after arriving at the university and along the way provided guidelines for my narrative inquiry. You helped me tell the preservice teachers' stories by providing invaluable feedback to the drafts you reviewed. Your detailed notes helped me write (and rewrite) and organize the narratives of the teachers' stories so that readers will understand the lives of preservice teachers. You challenged me to articulate an understanding of a narrative inquiry paradigm, and then added, "You did it, [narrative inquiry], it's yours, now own it!" Thank you for suggesting the references that were critical to my study at just the right times in my research process. Dr. Amy Lannin, you shared a story with me that became the starting point for my study. Instead of suggesting what I might write about in an assigned paper, you told a story. In your story, you shared your experience in interviewing students in a course you taught as a way of learning more about your own teaching. Your story planted the seed in my thinking for a study of preservice teachers in a course I was teaching. As a result of that study, I realized the depth of insights and wealth of information that preservice teachers share when simply given the opportunity to do so. Dr. Lannin, you did not tell me what to write. Instead, you told me a story

It is essential that your son/daughter is fully prepared for these exams so please encourage them to take up all revision opportunities. The exam dates and times: Core Biology- Tuesday 16 May, 1pm Core Chemistry- Thursday 18 May, 9am Core Physics- Wednesday 24 May, 1pm Additional Biology & Biology Unit 3- Friday 9 June, 9am Additional Chemistry & Chemistry Unit 3- Wednesday 14 June, 9am Additional Physics and Physics Unit 3- Friday 16 June, 9am. On behalf of the Brentwood School District, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the start of the 2017-2018 school year. We hope your summer was enjoyable; however, we are sure both parents and students alike are eager to begin a new school year. The weeks leading up to September are always an exciting time, as they march us into the beginning of the school year. During those weeks, and throughout the summer, our faculty and staff have worked diligently to prepare each classroom and building to receive the roughly 20,000 students who will pass through our doors. We are driven to make this school year a phenomenal one by providing an exceptional level of leadership combined with a comprehensive educational strategy that aims to exceed the needs of our students. We have added a number of new teachers to our present roster of excellent educators, we welcomed a new Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education & Personnel and appointed several new administrators. We have hired two Clinical Nurse Practitioners to assist our current nursing staff distribute health services to our students and are in the process of opening a new self-contained bilingual classroom at the elementary level to improve services to our Special Education population. We continue to renovate the high school's television studio, its infrastructure and technology so that our students have access to the latest multimedia hardware and software systems. We are implementing traffic remediation at the Freshmen Center and Southwest Elementary School to alleviate parking congestion. Additionally, we will be launching a school bus monitoring application called "Here Comes the Bus" that will allow both parents and students to receive notifications of bus arrival for pickups, drop offs, and bus status updates during emergencies. Throughout this school year, our collective aim will be to develop students who are college and career ready. Our community requires it, and our students deserve it along with the opportunities for them to succeed. As such, we will continue to maintain high expectations for our District and will work jointly to build strong and effective partnerships with our administrative team, teachers, support staff, parents, students, and community. Furthermore, we ask for your continued support as your children navigate the educational process. Our schools are built on the principle of collaborative effort and inclusivity; to that end, your participation is critical to your child's success. We encourage you to attend as many Board and PTA meetings as possible so that you are fully engaged in your child's learning experience. Students will volunteer their time in Santo Domingo, participate in the closing service of the Episcopal diocese convention, and most significantly, view the humpback whales that make their annual trip to the small coastal town of Samana Bay. This is a trip designed for students who want to help others, who love the ocean, enjoy the outdoors, can appreciate different cultures, and are looking for adventure. They will depart Charleston on Thursday, February 16 and return on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. The itinerary is as follows: Day Location Hotel Meal Description of Services Thurs Santo Domingo Holdepa Caribe Hotel D Transfer to hotel, evening orientation, and welcome dinner. Friday Santo Domingo Holdepa Caribe Hotel BLD After your first Dominican breakfast, head to Iglesia Santisima Trinidad to complete their painting and construction needs. Head out on the town for a dinner immersed in their culture. Sat Santo Domingo Holdepa Caribe Hotel BLD After an early breakfast, visit some sites of Santo Domingo and then return to Iglesia Santisima to complete all projects that started on the first day. Sun SD to Samana The Bannister Hotel BLD Spend the morning attending the final day of the Episcopal Diocese convention church service. Eat lunch at the convention and then board the bus for the two hour ride to Samana. Spend the afternoon enjoying the beach and the town of Samana. This walkout, referred to as the "Enough: National School Walkout" is an organized demonstration against gun violence in direct response to the recent tragic events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The exact nature of these walkouts will vary between communities, but the message centers around creating and maintaining a safe school environment for students and staff by urging Congress to pass legislation that will help keep us all safe from gun violence. At ELGHS, the approach was taken to involve our National Honor Society members, our student leaders, in the planning of our participation in this event. Together, the following activities will take place. For students and staff at ELGHS interested in participating in this walkout, they will be allowed to quietly get out of their seat, leave classroorns, and go to the auditorium at 10:00. Participation is completely voluntary. Once gathered in the auditorium, several NHS members have organized a peaceful demonstration that will give students and staff an opportunity to sign letters to our U.S. Senators and Representatives. There will also be an explanation of a school-climate movement sweeping through the country called "What's Your 17?" In addition, information will be provided about an upcoming community rally being organized for Saturday, March 24 and how interested parties can take part. Working with the NHS students, we believe that there are times in life when we have to stand up for what we believe in, and that this is a moment in history that demands action. We hope this experience can empower youth to realize that they have a voice and that it's imperative that they engage in the process and stay involved. January 15, 2018 Dear Parents, Students, and Staff: Elementary and middle school students will be assessed through CMAS this spring. The testing window is open April 9-27, but a specific schedule of testing dates will be mailed out March. Grades 3-8 will be assessed in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Fourth and Seventh grades will also be assessed in Social Studies while Fifth and Eighth grades will assess in Science. The state of Colorado selected to go with SAT instead of ACT during the 2017 assessment and are continuing with this same testing this year. The Colorado PSAT will be given to 9th and 10th grade students and the SAT will be given to 11th grade students. The assessments will be given April 10, 2018. This year the CO PSAT 8-9 and CO PSAT 10 will take place of CMAS for 9th and 10th grade English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. However, we will be required to administer CMAS Science and Social Studies for 11th grade students. The SAT for 11th grade students has an optional essay component which must be registered for prior to February 14th. I have been in contact with students and many have let me know they wish to take the essay component so we will get them registered next week. Please visit with your child to make sure you as parents are in agreement with their choice. We will not be allowed to register after the deadline. The SAT also includes an optional Student Search Service questionnaire. This provides information about the student to help connect them with colleges and scholarship programs based on their interest. Nearly 1,700 colleges use Student Search Service to look for students who match a range of factors such as the area where they live or go to school, their interests, and what they plan to study in college. Only eligible colleges, scholarship, and educational organizations can participate. They most often search expected high school graduation date, cumulative grade point average, and intended college major. Students can choose which optional questions they complete. Dear Parents, The Canadian Diabetes Association Clothesline® Program is organizing a clothing drive in Partnership with your school and the Upper Grand District School Board, and is asking for your donated 'gently' used clothing. Items must be cloth based and can include shoes, linens, drapery, purses and hats. The Canadian Diabetes Association is a charitable organization which supports the mandate of providing Canadians with diabetes research, education, services and advocacy. The funds raised through our fund raising efforts help support the 9 million Canadians living with or at risk of diabetes. One out of every four Canadians are affected by diabetes, that is more than any other disease. This joint fundraiser benefits the Upper Grand District School Board and your school through funds that are returned back to UGDSB from the Canadian Diabetes Association through the sale of the used clothing by the CDA that is collected during the "In the bag" fundraising event. The Clothesline® Program involves collecting reusable clothing and household goods. By reselling these items to Value Village stores, we are able to raise funds to help Canadians affected by diabetes. Clothesline® also helps preserve our environment by diverting more than 42 million kilograms of clothing and household items from Canadian landfills annually. I love all the smiles, high fives, and hugs each morning. The best quote of the week was on Wednesday when a 4K student hugged a 6th grader and said, "See you on the bus tomorrow!" I love the relationships our students build with each other. There are two flyers attached to the email this week. Both are opportunities for your students to participate in events outside of the school day. The first is a Youth Rally being held at Immaculate Conception Church on Wednesday, October 11th. The event is a youth ministry event geared for students in grades 6 -12. Please see the flyer for info on this great opportunity. The second flyer is from the High School Varsity Cheerleading Squad for their annual cheer clinic. Currently two St. Mary Alumni are on the squad, Jaida Benish and Jennifer Graham. The clinic is open to students in grades K-5. The St. Mary Ministry of Education is looking for volunteers for their committee. The Ministry of Education meets once a month with the principal on a consultive basis regarding school issues and policies. The meetings are held on Tuesday nights at 5:00 P.M. and generally last one hour. If you are interested or have questions please contact me or any of the current members: Arlene Tenner, Mary Medini, Jodi Lenz, Steve Graham, Carolyn Anderson, or Lisa Naser. No experience is required for this committee! On October 7th it is the big Marathon-It fundraiser, the kids are very excited about this event. It is with heavy heart that I will not be able to attend the event. The theme for this concert is "Popular Music Through the Decades". Students are encouraged to dress in the style of their decade(s). K-2 will be singing songs from the 1950's, 3-5 will be singing songs from the 1960-70's, and 6-8 will be singing songs from the 1980's-90's. All students in the school band are required to wear a white shirt with black pants and black dress shoes. Band students are more than welcome to bring a change of clothes with them and change in the bathroom during intermission. All students are asked to arrive and be seated by 5:45 pm. Students will sit with their class for the concert, and can go to their assigned seat when they get to the gym. If your student is in band, they should arrive at 5:30 so they have time to set up and warm up their instrument. I'm looking forward to a great first show! The focus was on effective Lesson Planning and teaching to the Department of Education Standards. We also administered a Benchmark exam in order to ascertain the students' level of progress. That data will be utilized to develop individualized plans for each child. Students will be grouped according to their area of deficiencies, and the chart will be updated based on their rate of progress. The individual Data Chart will also be utilized for our Saturday Test Preparation Program. These academic strategies will certainly lead to a significant growth in our State Test Results. We have re-structured our After School program in order to expose our students to a variety of artistic program. I am very pleased with the level of parental involvement. More than seventy percent of the parents were in attendance on November 4th for the parent-teacher conferences. Maurice, Principal Message du Directeur Chers Parents, Cette semaine, les professeurs de NYFACS ont participé à un atelier spécial dédié à l'efficacité de l'enseignement et de l'organisation des leçons, en accordance avec les normes du Département de l'Education. Aussi, nous avons créé un programme d'évaluation afin de vérifier le progrès des élèves. Ces données, une fois réunies en tableaux de données, seront utilisées pour développer un plan individualisé pour chaque élève. Par la suite, les élèves seront regroupés par niveau de difficultés. Ces données individuelles serviront également à notre programme de préparation des tests d`Etat, programme prévu le samedi matin.
